In the past, sacred Buddhist scriptures were inscribed on prepared palm leaves which were stacked  in otder and then sandwiched
between two rigid covers. They were often wrapped in a mat -like wrapper and bound with tablet woven ribbons( sasigyo) with
inscriptions and symbols in them  . They were then stored in scripture cabinets in the temple or monastery and were brought out for
occasional use.  Devotees who commissioned the writing of the manuscripts and weaving of the sasigyo accrued spiritual merit for their
donations to the temple. The Sbun Nga Texile Museum, Chiang Mai
